I'm running out of room for all these humidor studies.

Infusing Cigars

10/21/2020

We're currently experimenting with infusing bourbon into cigars using a HumiForm Mini. Seems to be working very well with the filament on its lowest setting. Seems the higher vapor pressure of alcohol results in higher relative humidity than water for the same filament setting. When the lid is opened the aroma is awesome.

Home Made Humidor

I purchased a produce keeper with vents on two sides that I lined with sheets of Spanish Cedar, and added a HumiForm on its lowest filament setting and a wireless hygrometer. This setup is able to maintain cigars in the 65% plus relative humidity range.

Study 4 - Comparing HumiForm Mini to Pouches

10/9/2020

On Day 12, the humidor containing the two 84% RH pouches is showing considerable moisture content variation on the bottom, where the pouches are in direct contact with the surface. Moisture measurements include 9 points on the lid, 9 points on the bottom, and 4 points on sides of each humidor. One side of each pouch has been solidified since the first 24 hours of testing.

In future studies, we'll examine how much moisture variation occurs in cigars that are in direct contact with pouches.

Typical Humidity Variation with HumiForm 100 V

9/21/2020

The relative humidity inside a 100-stick humidor full of cigars and containing a HumiForm 100 V Cigar Humidifier at a target of 71% RH, tends to vary a few percent throughout the day as shown in graph below. During the same period, the temperature inside the humidor varied between 68 and 73 deg F.

Cigars Humidified with HumiForm

9/15/2020

I pulled 30 cigars from a humidor humidified to 70% RH using a HumiForm for over a year. The cigars were taken from different levels inside a 100 stick humidor, and their individual humidity measured using a CigarMedics Humidimeter. The cigars on top were brand name cigars in cellophane wrappers, while the cigars in the middle and bottom of the stack were un-named and unwrapped. The caps averaged 64% while foots averaged 62% humidity.

According to the HumidiMeter manufacturer, the reading at the foot of the cigar will always be lower because the foot is open and moisture will enter/escape through the foot.  It's also possible to test the head of the cigar which will give you a higher reading as the moisture is "trapped" by the cap.

You will also notice that different types of cigars will give you different readings even if they have been in your humidor for equal time due to how the different tobacco leaves hold moisture.  We found that many customers prefer their cigars to have a foot reading 60%-65% because it will increase as you smoke the cigar, but this is all personal preference

Study 3 - Comparing HumiForm to Pouches -  at 92 hours of Seasoning

At 9:30 am today - about 92 hours since seasoning was initiated, two pre-humidified cigars were measured on their cap end at 65% using a CigarMedics Humidimeter. One cigar was placed into the bottom back corner of each humidor (see photos) to test whether moisture is being pulled, added or maintained this early in the seasoning process. The humidor with the Mini is holding steady in the 72% RH range while the humidor with the pouches has reached 79.5% RH.

At 72 hours into the seasoning, the HumiForm read 72.4% RH, while the 84% RH Pouches were at 79.3% RH.

Study 3 - Comparing HumiForm to Pouches at 48 hours

9/12/2020

At 48 hours into testing, the Mini was reading 72% RH and the pouches were at 77.5% RH. The amount of exposed filament was reduced so none is showing on either side of tee, similar as shown in photos below. In the previous study, it took about a week for the 84% RH pouches to reach this humidity level. This may be related to using wood only humidors (no glass tops) in this study, and eliminating the vented wood holder for the pouches.

Study 1 - Comparing HumiForm to Pouches at 1 Month

9/10/2020

This study initiated on Aug 10th reached the 1 month milestone today. At this time the Mini humidor is measuring 71.3% RH while the 72% Pouch is measuring 68.4% RH using wireless hygrometers. This was surprising, as we expected the humidor to be right at 72% RH.
